Smoking (Part 1)
October 28th, 2011I started smoking when I was 18 or 19. I picked the habit up casually because my high school crush smoked. Later she complained about having a hard time quitting and I wanted to prove to her that quitting was easy if she put her mind to it. I ran track and cross country all four years of high school, so smoking was a no brainer for me.
Joe’s Inn
October 28th, 2011The online reviews of this place will make you think their spaghetti comes with tits. I’ll definitely be back for a drink because their tap selection is great, but I’ll fill up on food beforehand.
I ordered a bottle of cream soda and their Spaghetti Albert with cheese (thick plate of spaghetti with oven toasted cheese on top). It came with a basic house salad. The side was white bread with a thick crust – wasn’t toasted at all. Spaghetti was Ok but in the end it was just spaghetti. It also had a slight metallic taste that I couldn’t pinpoint (sauce or noodles or both). The bottled cream soda was the best part of the meal, sadly.
Overall the food was tolerable, they have a wide variety of beer on tap, beautiful wood decor, and friendly staff. I give Joe’s Inn a 3 out of 5 for dining. I will give another rating for just “chilling with a beer.”
Moshi Moshi
October 26th, 2011The first thing you notice when you walk through the door is the interior design. Imagine rustic western tavern meets zen garden. I can’t explain it any better than that. Check out the website’s gallery at the link below. You’ll notice that all the images are overexposed but trust me, it looks really sharp inside.
We arrived shortly before closing but service was friendly and prompt. I ordered miso soup and it was acceptable but not great. We ordered assorted sushi and two “messy rolls.”
I refer to any restaurant’s specialty rolls where they have a bunch of random ingredients as “messy rolls.” This does not imply the roll tastes bad, I just prefer simpler sushi – fish on top of rice. I always order egg if available. As an example, this is Moshi Moshi’s “Eye of the Tiger” specialty roll: soft shell crab, avacado, cucumber, white tuna, green onion, cilantro cream sauce, sriracha and eel sauce. Not bad, but “messy.”
The sake was served cold – which is not my preference – but was light and fruit flavored; very tasty.
The atmosphere/decor has so much potential, but unfortunately I will not be back any time soon. Moshi Moshi gets a 3 out of 5.
Pumpkin Ales
October 20th, 2011Before I begin let me say that I love pumpkin ales and that I have a low tolerance for super heavy or hoppy beers. This is a list of pumpkin ales that I’ve had so far.
Trickle Up Economy
October 16th, 2011I’d like to take a moment to think about a trickle up economy and the repercussions it might have on our society.
Momotaro Sushi
October 10th, 2011The atmosphere is cozy. Very cozy. This restaurant is perfect for a dinner date or small gathering of friends. There’s maybe two tables that seat four, the rest of the room is filled with two-seaters, and a short bar area.
I ordered miso soup, a few assorted sushi, and Sake. The miso soup was delicious, all sushi items were made to order, and the waitress was friendly and decent about wait times. We did not have any issues with hair in our food (as some in the reviews have said) but there was a friendly fly at the bar for a while.
For now I give Momotaro Sushi a 4 out of 5 until I learn how to rate sushi restaurants better.

The Jerk Pit
October 10th, 2011I was driving through downtown Richmond looking for a new restaurant to try out. There were a few contenders but I ultimately settled on a Jamaican lunch shack on Broad St. And boy am I glad I stopped here.
I’ve never seen this place before. It is a family owned and operated establishment. There’s not much by way of signage and the windows are covered with indoor plants. There might be enough room to seat 10 people but not much more. The menu is a single page and almost all food items are made to order. They have an assortment of jerked meats (snicker) and curried meats. They also have a few vegetarian items. I waited about five minutes for my order but it was no problem.
There were two people of Caribbean descent getting food when I went in. This is a good sign for any ethnic restaurant.
I ordered the jerk chicken (thigh and a leg), coleslaw, rolls, and a soda for $8. The jerk chicken was by far the tastiest chicken I have had in a long time, possibly ever. The outer skin was charred black but tender, spicy but not overkill, and lightly oiled but not dripping with grease. The meat fell off the bone with ease and there were no chunks of fat to cut off/chew through. The coleslaw was sweet like a mayonnaise-based dish but much tangier. I will have to go back and ask what’s in it.
The usual soft drinks are available in cans, but the real treat is their house ginger beer. It will set your mouth on fire. You might want to ask for a side of water if you’re not used to this kind of beverage.
If you’re in Richmond and looking for something out of the ordinary for lunch, you’d be retarded to pass this up. I give The Jerk Pit a 4 out of 5.
City Dogs
October 5th, 2011I went to the City Dogs located on Main St. just outside the VCU campus for a late lunch. The place was almost empty at 3pm but I’ve heard it gets pretty busy during peak hours.
I stopped by on a Wednesday, which happens to be $3 burger day. You get a plain cheeseburger for $3. Lettuce, tomato, and onion are an extra 25 cents. Burger, toppings, fries, and drink added up to $7.80 (without tip).
I sat outside on the patio. Wait time was reasonable. Burger is plain with no mayonnaise; you have to add your own ketchup and mustard. The waitress brought ketchup, mustard, napkins, and salt in a 6-pack carrier.
I dove into the fries right away. They were delicious in their own right (not because of an abundance of seasoning salt). I believe they are cooked in peanut oil but forgot to ask. The fries were lightly salted and peppered by the cook.
The burger was hands down the best burger I’ve had in months, possibly years. It is better than a Five Guys burger. It makes fast food burgers shake in their wrappers. The bun appeared to be toasted on the grill. The toppings were so fresh I could smell the Mexican on them. The slice of cheese had melted but was not neglected while sitting on the grill (hadn’t turned into a translucent mess). The meat was cooked to well done but not overcooked.
The bartender was really cute. And she said she loved me.
I give City Dogs a 5 out of 5.
Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Campaign
September 29th, 2011Michelle Obama announced her “Let’s Move” campaign in 2010. Shortly after her announcement, Fox News railed the white house for indoctrinating our children, controlling our diets, and manipulating us with socialism. The odd thing about this particular issue is that childhood obesity and diabetes is at an all-time high. This article details one reason Fox News might have had a problem.
